Sources and how this tool works
What is counted. We downloaded NOAA’s Storm Events detail files for 2016 through 2026 and kept every Thunderstorm Wind, Hail and Tornado report with a logged location. A wind or hail report counts for your town if its starting point is within 5 miles of your town’s center point, whichever county or state it was logged in. A tornado counts if the straight line from the start to the end of its logged path comes within 5 miles. County totals elsewhere on this page are for Shelby County only.
Town centers. U.S. Census Bureau 2024 Gazetteer internal points for Germantown, Collierville and Piperton. For Memphis, Cordova, Eads, Fisherville and the River Oaks, Kirby Woods and Southwind neighborhoods, the average of the Census 2024 ZIP code internal points for the ZIP codes we serve there, so every circle is centered inside our service area.
“Last notable event” is the most recent hail report of 1.00 inch or more, wind report of 70 mph or more, or tornado path within 5 miles, including 2026.
Wind speeds. NOAA logs thunderstorm wind in knots, and most reports are estimated from the damage rather than measured by an instrument. We convert to mph and say which is which.
Limits. These are reports, not a complete record of every gust or stone. Busy neighborhoods get more reports than open country, one storm can produce several reports, and many wind reports are logged at a standard 58 mph estimate when trees or lines come down. The 2026 file was updated September 18, 2026 and runs through June 2026.
Hail sizes use the National Weather Service hail size chart: 0.75 in for a penny, 1.00 in for a quarter, 1.25 in for a half dollar, 1.75 in for a golf ball, 2.50 in for a tennis ball, 2.75 in for a baseball and 4.00 in for a grapefruit.
Data from the Storm Events Database from NOAA NCEI, the 2024 Gazetteer from the U.S. Census Bureau and the hail size chart from the National Weather Service.
Ten years of storms
The storms that shaped Memphis rooflines
Most years bring a handful of damaging wind days and a hail day or two. A few nights stand out, and they are worth knowing if you own a home here.
The biggest night in the record is May 27, 2017. A bow echo and a separate derecho crossed Shelby County that evening, and NOAA logged more than 480 trees down across the county, over 100 buildings damaged, many of them by falling trees, and more than 180,000 people without power. It took over a week to get everyone back on, and NOAA puts the property damage from that one night at $9.5 million.
Summer 2023 was the busiest stretch in the record. Shelby County logged 55 damaging wind reports that year, 40 of them in June and July. On June 25, bowing storms knocked out power to more than 120,000 utility customers in the county. On July 18, straight-line winds brought down eleven power poles along Winchester Boulevard in Germantown, and more than 130,000 customers lost power.
Tornadoes are rare here, but not unheard of. On October 21, 2019, an EF1 touched down at Memphis International Airport and tracked 7.4 miles into the Balmoral area of East Memphis, with significant roof damage at an apartment complex and trees and business signs down along the way. NOAA logged $1.5 million in property damage.
The storm nights that count most
| Date | What hit | Where | What NOAA logged |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 27, 2017 | Derecho and bow echo winds | Countywide | 480+ trees down, 100+ buildings damaged, more than 180,000 people without power for over a week |
| Oct 21, 2019 | EF1 tornado | Memphis International Airport into East Memphis | A 7.4 mile path, 250 yards wide, $1.5 million in property damage |
| Jan 25, 2021 | Large hail | Shelby Drive, southeast Shelby County | 2.00 inch hail, the biggest stone logged in the county in ten years |
| Jun 25, 2023 | Straight-line winds | Northern Shelby County into Fayette County | More than 120,000 Shelby County customers without power, $4.3 million in property damage |
| Jul 18, 2023 | Straight-line winds | Germantown and East Memphis | Eleven power poles down on Winchester Boulevard, more than 130,000 customers without power |
| Apr 2, 2025 | Widespread hail | Cordova to Collierville | 10 hail reports, with golf ball hail near Shelby Drive and Forest Hill-Irene Road |
What these figures can and cannot tell you
Every count on this page is a report from a spotter, a resident, an officer or a National Weather Service survey crew. Busy neighborhoods get more reports than open country, so a quiet number does not always mean a quiet sky. What the reports do show is that wind, not hail, is the main storm threat to Memphis rooflines, and it shows up somewhere in the county most summers.

What wind and hail actually do to a gutter system
Gutters sit right at the edge of the roof, where wind pulls hardest and hail hits hardest. Here is what our crews look for after a storm.
Wind is the one Memphis homes deal with most. It pulls on the whole run, works hangers loose and lets a gutter sag or lean away from the fascia. Then there are the trees. Big oaks, maples and sweetgums drop limbs in every serious storm here, and a single heavy branch can crease a gutter, crush a downspout or fold a guard.
Hail damage is easier to miss from the yard. A dented gutter still looks like a gutter. What changes is how it works. Dents along the bottom can leave low spots that hold water, a crushed elbow chokes the flow, and a seam that took a direct hit can start to drip at the corner. None of that shows up until the next heavy rain.
After a Mid-South storm, our crew photographs and records everything we find, so your insurance file is ready if you choose to file a claim. Whether to file, and what your policy covers, is up to you and your insurer.
What our crew inspects after a storm
- Hangers and the fascia board behind each gutter, checked for looseness or rot.
- Every run for sag, lean and spots where water now pools.
- The face, bottom and back of every run for dents and creases.
- Downspouts and elbows, checked for crushed, split or kinked pieces.
- Corner seams and end caps, checked for new leaks.
- Gutter guards, checked for bent, lifted or torn panels.
- Outlets and downspouts flushed with water to confirm they still drain.
- Splash areas and extensions, making sure water still lands clear of the house.
Repair or replace?
Not every dent or sag means new gutters. A few dents with solid seams and good drainage can often be left alone, and loose hangers can be reset. When a run has split seams, crushed outlets and loose hangers along most of its length, our crew forms a new seamless gutter on-site, cut to the exact length of your roofline. If the storm also tore up your guards, it is a good time to look at BroGuard gutter guards. For smaller fixes, see our gutter repair page.

April through July is when Memphis gets hit
Damaging wind can come in any month here, but the record leans toward late spring and summer. Hail peaks a little earlier, in April and May.
Of the 183 damaging wind reports logged in Shelby County from 2016 to 2025, 134 came between April and July, and June and July alone account for 80. Hail runs earlier: 31 of the 63 hail reports fell in April or May. Winter is not off the table either. January brought 11 wind reports over those ten years, and the county’s biggest hailstone of the decade fell on January 25, 2021.
Spring is also the wettest stretch of the Memphis year, so a gutter that took a hit in an April storm gets tested again within days. Check right after a storm, not in the fall.
A simple storm-season routine
- Before April.Get the gutters cleaned and the hangers tightened so spring storms hit a system that drains. Our gutter cleaning crews flush every downspout.
- After each storm.Look up your town in the Storm Check, write down the date, and do the ten minute walk from the ground.
- Inside a few weeks.Schedule a free check so any damage is caught and photographed while that storm is still recent.
Rather not keep track? Our gutter maintenance program puts your home on a schedule timed to spring storms and fall leaf drop. For the cleaning side of the calendar, see how often to clean your gutters in Memphis.

How storm history differs across our service area
Storms do not treat every Mid-South town alike. A few patterns jump out of the reports.
Ten years of storms, five miles around every town
| Town | Wind reports | Hail reports | Biggest hail | Tornado paths |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| River Oaks | 36 on 24 days | 10 on 8 days | 1.50 in, Sep 5, 2023 | 1 |
| Memphis | 26 on 19 days | 11 on 9 days | 1.50 in, Apr 2, 2025 | 1 |
| Kirby Woods | 26 on 18 days | 10 on 7 days | 2.00 in, Jan 25, 2021 | 1 |
| Cordova | 18 on 16 days | 13 on 7 days | 1.75 in, Apr 2, 2025 | 0 |
| Germantown | 19 on 14 days | 11 on 7 days | 1.75 in, Apr 2, 2025 | 1 |
| Southwind | 17 on 10 days | 10 on 9 days | 1.75 in, Apr 2, 2025 | 1 |
| Collierville | 15 on 13 days | 5 on 4 days | 1.75 in, Apr 2, 2025 | 0 |
| Eads | 5 on 4 days | 7 on 5 days | 1.00 in, May 2, 2025 | 1 |
| Piperton | 10 on 10 days | 2 on 2 days | 1.00 in, May 2, 2025 | 1 |
| Fisherville | 4 on 3 days | 6 on 4 days | 1.00 in, May 2, 2025 | 1 |
What stands out
- River Oaks logged the most damaging wind reports of any town we checked, 36 in ten years, sitting right between East Memphis and Germantown where the most people are out reporting.
- Kirby Woods sits about a mile from the track of the October 21, 2019 EF1, the closest of any town on the list.
- The golf ball hail of April 2, 2025 shows up under Germantown, Collierville, Cordova and Southwind.
- Eads, Piperton and Fisherville log fewer reports, partly because there are fewer people out there to make them. A quiet number does not mean a quiet sky.
- The five-mile circles overlap, so a single storm may appear under two or three nearby towns.
Whatever your number, the job after a storm is the same. We cover every one of these communities from our office on Shelby Oaks Drive. See the full list on our service areas page.

From 2016 through 2025, NOAA logged 183 damaging thunderstorm wind reports on 74 separate days in Shelby County, about seven wind days a year. Over the same ten years there were 63 hail reports on 31 days and one tornado. Most of it comes between April and July.
A 2.00 inch stone reported on Shelby Drive on January 25, 2021, from a lone supercell that moved through ahead of a cold front. The busiest hail day was April 2, 2025, with 10 reports in the county, including golf ball hail near Shelby Drive and Forest Hill-Irene Road.
Yes. On October 21, 2019, an EF1 touched down at Memphis International Airport and tracked 7.4 miles into the Balmoral area of East Memphis. NOAA logged it at 250 yards wide with $1.5 million in property damage. It is the only tornado NOAA logged in Shelby County from 2016 to 2025.
Yes, and in Memphis it is the more common problem. Strong wind works hangers loose and pulls runs away from the fascia, and falling limbs from big oaks and maples can crease a gutter or crush a downspout. We check hangers, pitch and seams on every post-storm visit.
That depends on your policy and your insurer, and it is their call, not ours. What we can do is walk your gutters after a storm and photograph and document any damage we find, so your file has what it needs if you decide to file a claim.
Within a few weeks is best, while the storm date is fresh and before the next heavy rain finds the damage for you. Do the ten minute walk from the ground first, then call (901) 763-8330 or book online for a free post-storm check.
No. It shows the reports NOAA logged within five miles of your town center from 2016 through June 2026. Reports come from spotters, residents, officers and Weather Service survey crews, so a storm that nobody reported will not show up. If you saw damage, it is worth a look either way.

What Mid-South Homeowners Say
“Their estimate was reasonable and within close range to five other estimates. They were courteous, professional, and honest. All of our gutters were replaced in one morning, and they even took the scraps with them. Total job time from estimate to installment was only four business days. If you need gutters, call this business first. Excellent service and product/installation. Thank you!!!”

Posted on Google“These guys did an amazing job installing gutters and replacing rotten wood at my mom’s new home. From start to finish, everything was perfect. Parker did the initial evaluation and estimate. He immediately set us at ease and gave us an honest and thorough assessment of the previous 30-year old gutters. They scheduled us in quickly to avoid any additional damage to the property, and knocked out the job in a little over 1/2 a day. Trace and Will led the work on site and walked us through everything when the work was done. I will definitely use them again!”
