Quick answer
How do you get gutters ready for spring storms in the Mid-South? Clean them and flush every downspout before March, tighten loose hangers, reseal leaking seams and make sure each downspout carries water away from the house. NOAA’s normals put 16.88 inches of rain at Memphis International Airport in March, April and May, the wettest stretch of the year, and Storm Events records show 134 of Shelby County’s 183 damaging wind reports from 2016 to 2025 came between April and July. The rain
Spring is the wettest stretch of the Memphis year
The Mid-South gets rain all year, but nothing like March through May. Gutters that are half clogged after winter get tested right away.
NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Memphis International Airport put the yearly average at 54.94 inches. March brings 5.74 inches, April 5.87 and May 5.27, for 16.88 inches in three months. That is close to a third of the year.
The rain also comes hard. NOAA Atlas 14 puts the hardest hour you should expect in a typical year at 1.42 inches at our Shelby Oaks Drive office, with five minute bursts near 5 inches an hour. In a 10 year storm, the hardest hour reaches 2.32 inches. A gutter with packed outlets cannot move water that fast, and it goes over the front edge onto the beds and against the foundation.
| Rain at our Memphis office | Rate | 600 sq ft of roof to one downspout | 1,200 sq ft of roof to one downspout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardest hour in a typical year | 1.42 in/hr | About 9 gal/min | About 18 gal/min |
| Hardest 5 minutes in a typical year | 5.00 in/hr | About 31 gal/min | About 62 gal/min |
| Hardest hour in a 10 year storm | 2.32 in/hr | About 14 gal/min | About 29 gal/min |

Storm season
Storm season starts right on top of the rain
Spring rain is only half of it. The same months bring the wind and hail that pull gutters loose.
Of the 183 damaging thunderstorm wind reports NOAA logged in Shelby County from 2016 to 2025, 134 came between April and July. Hail runs a little earlier: 31 of the 63 hail reports fell in April or May. That means a gutter system goes from the heaviest rain of the year straight into the windiest stretch.
Wind pries at a gutter that is already loose. A hanger that backed out over the winter, or a run sagging with wet leaves, is the one that ends up on the lawn after a storm. Fixing those in March costs a lot less than replacing a run in June.

The checklist
Your spring gutter checklist
Do this once in late February or early March and your gutters go into the wet season ready.
- Clean the trough.Winter leaves, seed pods and twigs come out by hand, and the debris gets bagged rather than left in your beds. Our gutter cleaning covers it.
- Flush every downspout.Water should run freely from top to bottom. A downspout that trickles while the gutter above it spills is clogged.
- Tighten the hangers.Loose hangers are what storm wind finds first. Any run that sags or pulls away gets new hangers and a reset slope.
- Reseal the seams.Drips at corners and end caps are easy to fix before the rain and messy to fix during it. That is a quick gutter repair.
- Check where the water lands. Each downspout should end in an elbow turned away from the house. Where the yard holds water, underground drainage carries it farther out.
- No standing water in the gutters a day after rain.
- No run over about 40 feet draining through a single outlet.
- No gaps between the gutter and the fascia.
- Every downspout ends away from the foundation.
If the same runs overflow every spring even when they are clean, they may be undersized. Long runs and lower roofs that catch water from an upper gutter often do better with 6 inch gutters and larger downspouts.
Around the territory
What we see in spring across our towns
Every part of our territory gets the same rain, but the homes and trees change what fails first.
| Town | What we see in spring | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Germantown | Older systems under big trees, packed with oak tassels and winter leaves | Cleaning and flush, then BroGuard guards on the worst runs |
| Collierville | Large two story roofs where 5 inch gutters spill at the corners | Extra downspouts or 6 inch gutters on the big runs |
| Cordova | Late 1990s builder gutters with seams starting to leak | Resealing, or seamless replacement where many seams fail |
| Memphis | Clogged outlets and downspouts that dump against the foundation | Cleaning, flush and downspout extensions |
| Eads and Piperton | Open lots where spring wind loosens hangers | New hangers, or seamless runs on failing sections |
If you would rather not keep track, our maintenance program puts your home on a schedule timed to spring storms and fall leaf drop. For homes under heavy trees, BroGuard micro-mesh gutter guards keep the trough clear all season.

What Mid-South Homeowners Say
“Their estimate was reasonable and within close range to five other estimates. They were courteous, professional, and honest. All of our gutters were replaced in one morning, and they even took the scraps with them. Total job time from estimate to installment was only four business days. If you need gutters, call this business first. Excellent service and product/installation. Thank you!!!”

Posted on Google“These guys did an amazing job installing gutters and replacing rotten wood at my mom’s new home. From start to finish, everything was perfect. Parker did the initial evaluation and estimate. He immediately set us at ease and gave us an honest and thorough assessment of the previous 30-year old gutters. They scheduled us in quickly to avoid any additional damage to the property, and knocked out the job in a little over 1/2 a day. Trace and Will led the work on site and walked us through everything when the work was done. I will definitely use them again!”
